The Computer Centre

The Computer Centre is a central institution of the Ruhr University Bochum. The chancellorship is responsible for its operation, which is based on the constitution of the Ruhr University.

The tasks of the Computer Centre of the Ruhr University Bochum are put down in its statutes, which at the same time form the rules for its administration and use.

In its annual reports, the Computer Centre informs about its work and the use of the resources entrusted to it. The reports cover the time from April 1st to March 31st of the following year.

The Computer Centre's Advisory Council

The Computer Centre's advisory council looks after the interests of the users regarding IT services on behalf of the Chancellorship and the Senate in the form of promotion and coordination. In this function, it advises especially the Computer Centre. As the Senate's committee for the applications in Information Technology, according to article 30, section 8 of the Ruhr-University's Constitution, it also advises the Chancellorship and the Senate on matters regarding computer based information processing and communications for research, teaching and studies as well as the administration and other institutions of the Ruhr-University.

The Direction of the Computer Centre

The Computer Centre is run by an Executive Director. The Executive Director is deputized for by three Deputy Directors. The Executive Director as well as the Deputy Directors are professors. Those four professors represent the areas Humanities, Engineering, Medicine and Natural Sciences. The Executive Director represents the Computer Centre to the outside. He or she gets in touch with his/her deputies to discuss strategic and fundamental matters. He or she acts on his/her own responsibility in all matters but the ones for which the responsibility has been handed over to the Technical Director, and he or she has to inform and render account to the Deputy Directors. The Executive Director and the Deputy Directors gather at least twice a semester. The Executive Director and the Deputy Directors are appointed by the Chancellorship on the suggestion of the Senate of the Ruhr-University for a period of three years.

The Technical Director is in charge of the operation of the Computer Centre. He or she performs his/her duties under the responsibility of the Executive Director, who is the immediate superior of the Technical Director. The Technical Director is the immediate superior of all the Computer Centre's employees.

The Operative Units

The Computer Centre is divided into four specialised departments for operation. Each of them is run by a head of department. This operative structure is completed by a section for IT security.

Coordination of Administration and Planning
Coordination of the projects; coordination of the Computer Centre's resources; operation of the Computer Centre's office and acquisition department

Central Resources
Provision, operation and maintenance of the central servers and network components and their decentralised peripherals; supervision of the central components of the university's LAN and its connections to the outside; Central contact for error reports in the Computer Centre; operation of the Computer Centre's workshop; operation of the central machine control

The Projects

In order to carry out complex scientific tasks, projects are defined on demand for a limited time. A project team that consists of competent experts from the different departments of the Computer Centre works on these projects. External employees may complete the project team.

The board of directors defines the projects and sets up the project teams. Project info letters that are sent to all the organisational institutions of the Ruhr-University inform about the progress or the completion of the projects. In addition, the info letters also appear in the Computer Centre's annual reports.
